Hello and welcome to Math 1!
This class will integrate algebra and geometry and apply these mathematical concepts to the world around us. We will build a foundation of knowledge and skills to set each of you up for success in high school and in your future. Our main focus is to create a critical thinking mindset in order to use math to solve problems.
HOMEWORK:
Students will be assigned homework each day to reinforce what they learned in class. Students will receive a participation grade for this work. If a student does not do the assignment completely according to the directions, they will be assigned a College Prep. Finishing homework in CP will give students the opportunity to earn the points for the assignment.
FORMATIVES AND SUMMATIVES:
Students will take either a Formative (quiz) or Summative (test) almost every week. Generally, students will take two or three formatives while they are learning the material of the unit, and one summative at the end of the unit.
ORGANIZATION:
Organization is vital for success in Math 1. Students will be responsible for keeping an organized Math binder and notebook. This will be part of each student’s participation grade.
SUPPLIES:
Students must have the following supplies. If a student comes unprepared for class, they will be assigned a College Prep. If a student is unable to get these supplies, they must inform their teacher. I am willing to help any students with this requirement if they show responsibility and talk to me ahead of time.
Binder or folder to organize papers
Whiteboard marker(s) (for your own use – this supply will not be turned in to the teacher)
Pencils
MISSING WORK:
After absences, students are responsible for making up missed homework, quizzes and tests. Students have one additional day to make up work for each day they missed. Students will also have the opportunity to complete missing work for partial credit on make-up days that are scheduled throughout the school year.
Missing formative assignments will be accepted up until the end of the unit. Missing summative assignments will be accepted up until the end of the trimester.
CORRECTIONS:
Students can complete test corrections for an additional practice & preparation (P&P) grade but cannot reclaim credit on an exam.
TUTORING:
Tutoring will be available weekly for students to master the material presented in class. If for any reason you are unable to attend the scheduled tutoring time (Tuesdays after school), please do not hesitate to set up an alternate time with me.
GRADE BREAK DOWN:
Graded assignments will be weighted as follows:
· Practice and Participation (including Homework): 30%
· Formatives (Quizzes, Mastery Checks, Exit Tickets:) 20%
· Summatives (Tests and Major Projects): 30%
· Final Exams (Three times a year): 20%
Letter grades will be assigned as follows:
A+ = 99 - 100 B+ = 88 – 89 C+ = 78 – 79 F = 69 and below
A = 90 – 98 B = 80 - 87 C = 70 – 77
